Summary

Mia Tang is going for the goal in the fourth Front Desk novel by New York Times bestselling author Kelly Yang!

The Women’s World Cup coming to Southern California, everyone is soccer-crazy -- especially Mia Tang! The U。S。 is playing China in the finals, and Mia feels like her two identities are finally coming together。 Less exciting, though? The fact that her P。E。 teacher wants Mia to get out of the soccer field, too -- or fall short of the grade she needs to earn a spot at journalism camp。 But as always, Mia Tang is ready with a plan: she’ll track down the two women’s teams, interview them, and write an A-grade article for P。E。 instead!

It’s not so easy, though, finding professional athletes in Pasadena -- or bringing two identities together, even during a game。 As Mia aims for her goals, she’ll have to face prejudice, discrimination, and her own fears。 But if anyone can find a way to win, it’s Mia Tang!

Once again Kelly Yang has shared a piece of her life with us。 Mia’s tenacity allows her to triumph over racism and remind girls worldwide that they can do anything they set their mind to。 Couldn’t wait to share with my students!!

I'm really confused by the school counselor's attitude about being studious and that Mia has to be good at sports, too。 After his little talk I was thinking WTH。 I'm really confused by the school counselor's attitude about being studious and that Mia has to be good at sports, too。 After his little talk I was thinking WTH。 。。。more

Mia Tang, her family, and friends are back for the fourth book in the Front Desk series。 This time, the World Cup is coming to Anaheim, and Mia is so excited for the game, but struggling to player soccer in her own gym class。 Mia worries that her poor gym grade could keep her from attending the San Francisco journalism camp she dreams of attending over the summer。 If she can get an interview with Team China, maybe she can pass gym。 At the same time, Mia’s friend Lupe is struggling with a Math Cu Mia Tang, her family, and friends are back for the fourth book in the Front Desk series。 This time, the World Cup is coming to Anaheim, and Mia is so excited for the game, but struggling to player soccer in her own gym class。 Mia worries that her poor gym grade could keep her from attending the San Francisco journalism camp she dreams of attending over the summer。 If she can get an interview with Team China, maybe she can pass gym。 At the same time, Mia’s friend Lupe is struggling with a Math Cup coach who doesn’t coach, and she really wants Mia’s math teacher mother to help instead。 Jason and Hank now have their East Meets West restaurant, but both find trouble in keeping others from ruining their success。 Thankfully, the Calivista friends and families all have one another for support。 My family and I just adore Mia Tang, her parents, Hank, Jason, and even Mr。 Yao now (no spoilers, I promise)。 Kelly Yang deserves ALL the press for this series! 。。。more

The fourth installment in the Front Desk series is the strongest yet。 We now know the characters well, and they all have an arc that is developed and explained。 It's like visiting old friends! This is another great book in the series。 It takes place around the time of the US-China Women's World Cup。 The author gives an engaging story and has some additional information at the back of the book about her actual real life experiences。 This is another great book in the series。 It takes place around the time of the US-China Women's World Cup。 The author gives an engaging story and has some additional information at the back of the book about her actual real life experiences。 。。。more

These kids are precocious and maybe a bit too mature for being 6th grade or whatever they are supposed to be。 But I enjoy keeping up with their adventures。 Also, sneaking in some middle grade is a nice break from heavier books。

Book 4 in the series。 I really like this kid and her determination to fix things that she knows are wrong。 She’s always there for her friends and family。

Just like all the other Kelly Yang books, Key Player is great! My students like them and I do too!

I love that this book is semi-autobiographical。 Do you have more stories to share??

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It could be because I listened rather than read but I feel as though this one felt more like bite sized peppy lessons (learned through hard work, of course) than a story that could hold its own。 Everything wrapped up too prettily to feel real - everyone we care about won, which just doesn't seem to match the real world issues that this book tried to tackle and teach。 It could be because I listened rather than read but I feel as though this one felt more like bite sized peppy lessons (learned through hard work, of course) than a story that could hold its own。 Everything wrapped up too prettily to feel real - everyone we care about won, which just doesn't seem to match the real world issues that this book tried to tackle and teach。 。。。more

Kelly Yang has done it again! Key Player follows up on the story of Mia and her friends and family in Anaheim California。 This time around, Mia wants to get into a journalism summer camp in San Francisco but she has some hiccups along the way。 I just love getting to revisit this family and this time around we learn a little bit more about a younger Mr Yao。

I didn't love this one as much as the first book in the series。 It felt VERY young to me。 However, I think 10- to 12-year-olds would probably devour this。 I didn't love this one as much as the first book in the series。 It felt VERY young to me。 However, I think 10- to 12-year-olds would probably devour this。 。。。more

I could not love this series and this author more! Everything that you expect from a Front Desk book with amazing themes!

This was such a nice continuation of the Front Desk series。 We have young people trying to figure out who they are, older people who are stuck in their ways (or are they?), dreams that may or may not come true, reality of situations that stink, but how to handle them with grace。 I really do enjoy each and every character and subplot。 The ONLY thing I wish, is that the writing would feel more mature over time。 It still feels very young middle grade, but these kids (and adults) have gone through a This was such a nice continuation of the Front Desk series。 We have young people trying to figure out who they are, older people who are stuck in their ways (or are they?), dreams that may or may not come true, reality of situations that stink, but how to handle them with grace。 I really do enjoy each and every character and subplot。 The ONLY thing I wish, is that the writing would feel more mature over time。 It still feels very young middle grade, but these kids (and adults) have gone through a LOT! 。。。more

This book does not disappoint! It is wonderfully written and makes my heart ache for the characters。 Kelly Yang is one of my favorite authors and does such a great job with these books! From the beginning of the series, I've rooted for Mia and felt those feelings with her like I was a part of the characters。 It is a beautiful story and I love it so much。 "Come on, girls, do not wait to follow your dreams!" FABULOUS!!!! I have lots of students invested in Mia’s story and they’re going to LOVE this installment。 World Cup soccer, math competition, Mr。 Yao’s childhood journal entries, and Hank’s burger recipe…plus Mia is continuing her fight for justice! What a fabulous series。

Mia and her crew are back for another fantastic time。 I love Mia so much and I could hang out with her everyday! Can’t wait to meet Comma! 😉

I think this was the best of the series! A perfect historical fiction book centered in the USA。 A gentle look at generational trauma, classism and racism。 Super funny and sweet。 Get the whole series and get stoked for this glorious celebration of sportsmanship, friendship, and childhood。
